What to Pack for the Three Passes Trek?

The Everest Three Pass Trek is one of the hardest and most exciting treks in Nepal. It takes you over three high passes—Kongma La (5,535m), Cho La (5,420m), and Renjo La (5,340m). It is a long and tough journey, but the views are amazing. You will see tall peaks, deep valleys, and beautiful lakes. Every year, more than 20,000 trekkers visit the Everest region. To enjoy this trek, you must pack the right things. If you forget something important, it can make the trek very hard. So here is a simple and clear list of what to pack for the Everest Three Pass Trek.

Clothes: The Weather in the mountains changes fast. You need clothes for both warm and cold days.

  • 3 quick-dry T-shirts

  • 2 warm thermal tops

  • 2 thermal pants

  • 1 fleece jacket

  • 1 warm-down jacket

  • 1 waterproof jacket

  • 2 trekking pants

  • 1 rain pant

  • 1 warm hat

  • 1 sun hat or cap

  • 1 buff or scarf

  • 2 pairs of gloves (thin and thick)

  • 5 pairs of socks (some warm, some light)

  • 3 sets of underwear

Shoes: Your feet will walk for many hours. Good shoes are very important.

  • 1 pair of strong trekking boots (already used)

  • 1 pair of sandals or flip-flops for evenings

  • Gaiters (for snow and dust)

Sleeping Items: Tea houses give blankets, but it gets very cold.

  • Sleeping bag (-10°C to -20°C rating)

  • Sleeping bag liner (for extra warmth)

Toiletries:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste

  • Soap and small towel

  • Sunscreen (SPF 50+)

  • Lip balm with SPF

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Toilet paper

  • Wet wipes

First Aid & Health:

  • Personal medicines

  • Diamox (for altitude)

  • Pain relief tablets

  • Band-aids

  • Water purifying tablets

  • Blister cream or tape

Trekking Gear:

  • Backpack (30L–40L for daily use)

  • Duffel bag (for porters to carry)

  • Trekking poles

  • Headlamp with batteries

  • Water bottles (carry 2 liters)

  • Sunglasses (UV protection)

  • Snacks (energy bars, dry fruits, nuts)

  • Power bank

  • Dry bags (to keep clothes dry)

Papers & Money:

  • Passport with copies

  • Trekking permits (TIMS and Sagarmatha Park entry)

  • Enough Nepali cash (no ATMs in the mountains)

  • Travel insurance copy

Extras (Optional):

  • Book or journal

  • Playing cards

  • Camera or phone

  • Small lock for your bag

Try to keep your bag under 12 kg. Most trekking companies give a porter to help, but they can only carry about 15 kg. The Everest Three Pass Trek is hard, and you will be tired. Having the right gear will help you stay safe and happy. Pack smart, stay warm, drink lots of water, and listen to your guide. The journey is long, but the views will make it worth it.
