A Journey Into the Hidden Kingdom
Upper Mustang is often called the “Forbidden Kingdom” because it was closed to outsiders for many years. Even today, it still feels untouched. The land is dry and colorful, with red cliffs, deep canyons, and small villages that look like they belong in a storybook. People here follow ancient Tibetan culture, and life moves slowly.
We started the trek from Jomsom and slowly moved toward Lo Manthang, the walled city of the region. Every step felt like walking deeper into history. Prayer flags moved in the wind. Monasteries stood quietly on hills. Locals greeted us with warm smiles, even in such a remote place.
Trek Facts You Should Know
The Upper Mustang trek is not too long, but it feels rich and full of adventure. On average, the trek takes 10 to 14 days to complete. The total distance is around 120 to 150 kilometers, depending on the route. The highest point of the journey reaches about 4,210 meters at Lo La Pass. Even though it is not extremely high compared to other treks in Nepal, the dry climate and strong winds make it feel unique and challenging in its own way.
The Changing Landscapes
What surprised me most was how the landscape changed every day. At lower levels, there were green patches and river valleys. As we went higher, the land turned dry and desert-like. The mountains looked sharp and raw, with colors of red, brown, and orange.
Unlike many other trekking routes in Nepal, Upper Mustang does not have forests of green trees. Instead, it offers wide-open views, deep silence, and a feeling of space. It almost feels like walking on another planet.
Life in Lo Manthang
Lo Manthang is the heart of Upper Mustang. It is a walled city with old palaces, monasteries, and narrow streets. Life here feels simple and peaceful. People still follow traditions passed down for hundreds of years.
We spent time exploring the city, visiting ancient monasteries, and talking with locals. Every corner had a story. It felt like time had stopped here.
Culture That Feels Alive
The culture of Upper Mustang is deeply connected to Tibetan Buddhism. You can see prayer wheels, chortens, and colorful flags everywhere. Monks live in monasteries and follow old rituals. Festivals are still celebrated in traditional ways.
Even simple moments felt meaningful. Drinking tea in a small village house or hearing prayers in the morning made the journey feel spiritual, not just physical.
