Some days on Lough Derg just come together perfectly — and this recent guided session was one of those days that remind us why autumn pike fishing in Ireland is so special.

A Slow but Promising Start
The first hour was quiet, but the signs were encouraging. Baitfish were clearly present on the electronics, scattered along the edges of deeper water. Rather than rushing, we stayed mobile and kept searching — something that often makes the difference on Lough Derg.
Then came the first bit of excitement.
While working a medium soft lure along a drop-off, our guest felt a sharp tap but missed the hookset. We marked the spot and came back a few minutes later. Second cast, same area… this time the rod loaded properly.
The first pike of the day came to the net — a solid mid-80 cm fish and a great confidence booster for the morning.
Building Momentum Mid-Morning
As the light improved, the activity level clearly picked up. We located tighter bait balls in 4–5 meters of water, and the livescope started to show individual fish positioning just beneath the bait.
At one point, we actually watched a pike follow the lure on the screen without committing — always a heart-stopping moment. A quick change to a slightly slower presentation made the difference. Next cast, the fish turned and hit properly.
Moments like these are exactly why modern sonar and precise lure control are so effective on Lough Derg.
The Fish of the Day
Around early afternoon, with a light breeze creating perfect drift conditions, we moved to another productive zone we often rely on in autumn.
The take was unmistakable — a heavy, steady pull rather than a sharp hit. After a short but powerful fight, a beautiful pike just over the one-meter mark slid into the net.
High fives on the boat, quick photos, and a careful release back into the dark waters — exactly the kind of moment anglers travel to Ireland for.
Consistent Action Until the End
The afternoon continued with steady action, adding several more fish in the 70–85 cm range. Nothing huge after the main fish, but enough regular takes to keep the energy high right up to the final drift.
By the time we headed back toward Mountshannon, the client summed it up perfectly:
“That’s exactly the kind of Irish pike fishing day I was hoping for.”
Days like this are why October remains one of our favorite months on Lough Derg — active fish, grouped bait, and realistic chances of quality pike.
